Expert Tips: How To Wash And Dry Hair Properly At Home

how to wash hair correctly

Have you ever noticed that your hair always looks healthier and silkier after every salon wash? And, you can’t get that perfect hair wash at home by yourself, can you? The solution for these 2 concerns is simple - proper technique.

Here are the best tips on how to wash and dry hair correctly collected by ETE Saigon - Hair Happiness.

1. Proper way to wash your hair

Start with lukewarm water

Showering under hot water is relaxing, especially during cold time, yet this leaves your hair dry and lifeless. Instead, wet your hair with lukewarm water (at about 104℉); since it benefits your hair more than you have ever thought. Particularly, it helps you wash the hair thoroughly by slightly opening up the cuticles, encourages hair growth by stimulating blood flow and eliminates excess oil on your scalp.

Gently massage your scalp and hair roots

When your hair is wet, apply a hazelnut-sized blob of shampoo directly onto the roots; then massage into the scalp. Literally, any healthy hair strand begins at the scalp, so be extra gentle when shampooing the roots. Remember not to use your nails to scratch or massage the scalp too harshly; since you will be likely to hurt it. Also, devoting 1 - 2 minutes to massaging is essential. By doing this, you are boosting blood flow to the scalp and helping to stimulate hair growth.

Double up on your hair wash

For many people, one time of shampooing is already enough to get the hair clean. No! Stop thinking that way! The key to having a healthy and shiny hair look is always wash your hair twice. Two rounds of shampooing probably does the trick to cleanse both your strands and scalp. The first time removes dirt, pollution and product residue away from the scalp; while the second time adds more shiny and gloss to each of the hair strands.

Apply conditioner to the strands only

Conditioner is a product that should only be applied to the hair strands and not the roots. Otherwise, it leads to many problems such as product buildup (leading to scalp acnes), excess sebum, greasy strands and lifeless locks. Thus, the proper way to use conditioner is to apply it from mid-strands downward to the ends.

Unlike washing the hair, patience is a virtue when it comes to conditioning. A 5 - 7 minutes of waiting for the conditioner to do its job is a need. Additionally, you can wrap your hair in a towel for the optimal effect. It sounds pretty easy to get done, doesn’t it? In fact, it is not simple! Nailing this timing is the trickiest part; as if you leave the conditioner in for any longer than that, product buildup will be likely to occur. Therefore, make sure that you get the right timing.

Rinse with cool water

Cool water can be considered as the secret key to getting your hair look salon-fresh. While warm water opens up the hair cuticle, cool water seals it shut. Rinsing the hair thoroughly under cool water not only helps to stimulate blood circulation but also leaves the strands extra smooth and shiny.

2. Correct method to dry your hair

Probably, many of us have been told that blow-drying is the worst method to get our hair dry. When the hair is soaking wet, using a hair dryer can trap water inside the strands and boil it literally. Therefore, it is best to let your hair naturally air-dry.

Though, we understand that it is very tiring to wait hours for the hair to complete air-dry. Instead, why don’t we combine air-dry and blow-dry technique together?

Just leave your hair alone until it is about 75% dry. Once it is slightly damp, grab the hair dryer and blow-dry your hair. By allowing it to air-dry initially, you are preventing your locks from being damaged by the heat from hair dryers.
